Daemire gathered her four pups near, giving each the most loving and most sad gaze you'd ever seen.
Starlight stared up at her mother with confused eyes reflecting the sadness in her mother's gaze.
"What's wrong, Ma?" she asked quietly, her thick tail thumping the ground lightly.
"Destiny," the cream fae replied. "I brought you here alone, away from your father, because he shouldn't know..."
Daemire took a deep breath.
"And I know too much... Far too much if I were to live through this..."
Fox's brown pointed ears pricked forward as he turned his scarlet gaze upon his mother.
"What do you mean, Mother?" he asked.
"Upon every generation," Daemire began, gathering all her strength into her voice to keep it steady. "There are four wolves. The Dark brute. The red wolf. The Light fae. And the undetermined."
She looked upon each pup in turn as she said this.
"I cannot tell you each your destiny, for that is laid out and shown only to me since mine is fulfilled...almost completely. I have but one more purpose."
"No," Starlight shook her head, tears springing into her eyes.
Fox nudged his sister to be quiet before looking up at his mom again.
Ghost and Jenova sat silently, side by side, as their mother began again.
"One will save the world," Daemire said. "Another will try to destroy it. A third will choose a destiny covered by shadow. And the last unmentioned will restart the cycle.
"That of nature always restarts the cycle, ever since the first four siblings were born so long ago."
Jenova glanced at Starlight, envy and hate burning in her gaze. She connected that 'of nature' and 'restart the cycle' referred to the thirdborn of each litter, Daemire and Starlight. Daemire began with day and Starlight contained both star and light, all things of nature. And she thought she remembered her mother telling her their grandmother's name was Sundae, sun and day more things on the topic.
Ghost and Fox exchanged challenging gazes. Both knew of each other's part in this 'destiny' they would fulfill.
